Selleck and Mack met in 1983 in London when she was performing in the musical Cats and the two got married in 1987. The following year, the couple welcomed their daughter Hannah, now 36. The actor is also father to his son Kevin, whom he adopted with his first wife, Jacqueline Ray.

In a conversation with PEOPLE in August 2024, Selleck said his favorite part of his marriage was the “friendship” he had with his wife as well as her “sense of humor.”

He also credited her for being a “very independent person” and having “her own life” as one reason behind their longstanding marriage.

“I don’t think the relationship would’ve survived with somebody who was basically eating, sleeping, and working. And Jillie’s a very active person, as you can see,” he added.

Selleck’s birthday bash comes a little over a month after Blue Bloods concluded on CBS after 14 seasons.

The actor, who played patriarch Frank Reagan on the series, admitted he was not happy to hear the show was coming to an end, saying in October 2024, “I’m not going to turn into a bitter old guy saying, ‘Get off my lawn!’ I don’t believe in holding grudges. But if you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe.”

“After 15 years, it’s hard. It’s hard to let go because coming to work was a joy,” he added.

Despite the show ending, Selleck told PEOPLE in April 2024 he’s counting his blessings for the experience, both on Blue Bloods and throughout his career. “I’ve had a very good life, a very lucky life. I don’t know if it’s what I figured I’d be doing, but it’s with a lot of gratitude,” he said.
