Californian model lost her legs after an infection from a tampon…

Model Lauren Wasser Advocates for Awareness After Losing Legs…

California model Lauren Wasser faced a life-altering crisis in 2012 when a seemingly routine use of a tampon led to a devastating infection. Initially hospitalized with flu-like symptoms, Lauren’s condition quickly deteriorated as her body reacted to toxic shock syndrome (TSS) caused by a bacterial infection linked to the tampon.

At just 24 years old, Lauren fell into a coma for over a week. When she awakened, medical professionals faced a heartbreaking decision: to amputate one of her legs to save her life. Tragically, she later learned that she would need to undergo a second amputation.

Reflecting on her experience, Lauren said, “In a few months, I’m inevitably going to have my other leg amputated. There’s nothing I can do about it. But what I can do is help make sure that this doesn’t happen to others.”

Determined to raise awareness about the risks associated with tampon use, Lauren emphasized the importance of educating consumers. “Considering that the vagina is the most absorbent part of a woman’s body and is a gateway to many of our vital organs, it is crucial that consumers know the reality of what could happen to them,” she stated.

Since her ordeal, Lauren has become a passionate advocate for menstrual health and safety, aiming to inform others about the potential dangers of TSS and the importance of using menstrual products safely. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the need for greater awareness and education regarding women’s health issues.

Raising Awareness

Lauren’s journey highlights the critical need for transparency in the menstrual product industry. Her advocacy work focuses on spreading knowledge about toxic shock syndrome, encouraging women to be vigilant about their health and to recognize the symptoms of TSS.

As Lauren continues to share her story, she hopes to inspire others to prioritize their health and well-being, reminding us all of the importance of awareness and education in preventing similar tragedies.
